Percentage :

  • The term percentage means for every hundred.
  • A fraction whose denominator is 100 is ccalled a percentage and the numerator of the fractions is called the rate per cent.
  • It is denoted by the symbol %.
  • Percentage is a very useful tool for comparison in the analysis of data.
Mathematically,
      x%= x/100

Interpretation of Data Involving the Percentage

RULE - 1 :

To find how much per cent "x" is more or less than "y"

( when x > y)

( when y > x)

The denominator part contains the value with which the comparison is made.

RULE - 2:

To find the percentage change in any value, say x compared to the other value, say y

   Required percentage change (c) = (x-y)/y

if c is positive, then there is percentage increase in the value of x over y and if c is negative, then there is percentage decrease pr negative growth.

RULE - 3 :

Two percentage value can't be compared unless the base value are known.

RULE - 4 :

Two percentage value can be compared in terms of percentage values but not in absolute values when the base values are same although base values are not known

Some Questions on Percentage :

1. Find 79% of 429.
  1. 724
  2. 422
  3. 339
  4. 429
  5. None
Solution :  (3)

79%=80%-1%
80%=4/5 that is 4/5x429 = 4x85.8 = 343.2
1% = 4.29
That is 79% of 429 = 343.2 - 4.29 = 339

2. Find 361% of 2345.
  1. 8477
  2. 8465
  3. 7423
  4. 5300
  5. None
Solution : (2)

361% = (300+50+10+1)%
300% = 3x2345=7035
50% = 1/2x2345 = 1172.5
10% = 1/10 x 2345 = 234.5
1% = 1/100 x 2345 = 23.45

Required 361% = 7035 + 1172.5 + 234.5 + 23.45 = 8465

3. How much per cent of 1795645 is 64598 ?
  1. 3.33%
  2. 3.56%
  3. 2.30%
  4. 3.00%
  5. None
Solution : (1)

Required Percentage  = 64598/1795645 x 100% = 3.6%

But we have to find the approximate value so

Approx Percentage  = 6/179 x 100% ~ 6 /180 x 180% = 3.33%

4. Find in how many countries the production of cars has increased by less than 5% in 2008 over last year.

     COUNTRIES    2007      2008

  4. 3
  5. None
Solution (1)

Increment in production of cars in 2008 over 2007

in India = [760-700]/700 x 100% = 8.57%

In USA = [940-900]/900 x 100% = 4.44%

In China = [1860-1760]/1760 x 100% = 5.68%

In Japan = [1580 - 1500]/1500 x 100% = 5.33%

In Italy = [1218-1160]/1160 x 100% =5%
